Reiki is an energy healing method. It is over 2,500 years old, originating in Tibet and practiced for years in secrecy by Tibetan monks. Because of the secrecy around it, it was lost for centuries until it was rediscovered in the late 1800’s by Dr. Usui of Japan.
Reiki is a Japanese word that means universal life force (ULF.) It is the energy that is all around us, and also includes energy within our bodies, our connection to a higher source, the ground, the sky, a chair, etc. It’s everywhere. Reiki includes all that we can see and all that we cannot. Reiki uses ancient Sanskrit words and symbols to open up this energy. It is very powerful when used correctly. It can be used for self-healing or others by laying on the hands, no-touch healing, absentee or long-distance healing, or to increase abundance, luck, love and much more. It is effective on all levels of the body, mind, spirit and emotions. It accelerates the body’s ability to heal. Reiki identifies physical problems and opens the mind to the cause of pain and disease, assisting in the entire process of healing.
In a massage therapy setting, Reiki can be used to enhance bodywork, or be used purely as an energy session. In a typical Reiki session, the recipient is fully clothed, lying face up on a massage table and made comfortable. Prior to starting, the client is asked to state their intention for the session, whether they have received Reiki before, and offered the choice of light touch or no touch. The actual session starts with the practitioner tapping into their energy source, stating the intention of the clients and asking for the ULF to assist in this healing session. The Sanskrit words or symbols are then used as directed to facilitate the intended healing. Essential oils, sounds, crystals, or a bowl of salt water for aura-cleansing, tuning forks, or chanting may be used depending on the needs of clients and style of the practitioner. The session is closed by using a fast sweeping method over the client, or a slow clockwise head to toe energy clearing. Both occur within the auric field without touching the body. The client is usually asked to take a few deep breaths and a couple minutes of integration time before getting off the table. It is also common to save enough time for questions, discussion about experiences, and follow-up suggestions from the practitioner.
Reiki does not require any effort to practice, and classes are available all over the world. It is equally popular with both healing arts professionals and non-professionals. For beginners, it is suggested to try a session and see if the benefits are discernible. Many have found it to be an indispensable addition to their well being. The typical massage on a massage table combines both up (supine) and and face down (prone) time. Sometimes it’s a 50:50 mix, and other times more of one vs. the other. As therapists we develop guidelines for how to help you achieve your objective, and budget your time accordingly.
For example, a popular request is to have most of the time devoted to back, neck and shoulders. Within that, there are two variations. One request could be referring to the goal of maximum stress reduction or pain relief of the focus areas, or perhaps the more direct interpretation of working on the target areas as a way the primary way to address them. That is the purpose of that conversation at the beginning of your session. To achieve mutual clarity about your intentions. Sometimes there is an expectation that we will be spending the bulk of the session doing techniques directly on the pain place. In that case, probably what’s most important is for us to start your session at your target area and after a few minutes you will be ready for us to branch out, and find related areas which also need attention. Too much time on one area, and you eventually find diminishing returns or those muscles could put up more defense.
Suppose you have neck pain, and the assumption is that most of the time will be working directly on neck muscles and fascia. The first thing to realize is this will be a mostly supine massage. The alternative would be side-lying. Lying prone gives minimal access to the neck, and it is also the least comfortable way to have someone work on your neck as you would be feeling your face against the face cradle. It’s simply an unpleasant experience. Conversely, when you are supine, your neck can be put into a variety of positions, by turning the head one way and the other. Most people enjoy getting some traction at the neck, and this can be done most effectively facing up.
Shoulders get an equal opportunity, up and down. When shoulders are the priority, it makes sense to work them in both positions. Your six rotator cuff muscles can get more techniques
supine since there are more ways to position and stretch the arm in relation to the scapula. Moving the arm also will move the scapula several inches and expose muscles that would otherwise be hidden and inaccessible. If you have shoulder issues, it’s wonderful to receive work on the pectoral muscles which connect the sternum with the front of the scapula and the top of the arm. That’s supine. If you have back issues, in addition to working directly on the back muscles, including time for the front torso has the potential to help the back also.
For arms and hands, we have equal access up or down. The difference is your comfort, and reducing the face down time will reduce the time that your face is in the cradle. Also for some
people, facing up is a bit easier on the neck. Clearing the stress out of your arms will do more than just make your arms feel better. All of the nerves in the arm come out of the neck, and go through the shoulders. Some of the stress in your neck will exit your body through the arms when those channels open up.
Clearing the upper extremities will pay off at the top of the spine. Doing a good job on the lower extremities is going to support the bottom of the spine. With deep tissue sessions, we are also usually thinking about getting some green lights in the extremities prior to addressing the core.
The summary point with all of this is looking at the budgeting of your time on the massage table. With relaxation massage it is common to spend 60-80% of the session prone. Once you have had that type of massage several times a year for several years, and you’re interested in more of a result-oriented stronger therapy, you might enjoy starting at least half of your sessions up, and allowing at least half the time for supine work.
The prone work is analogous to coasting downhill… less challenge, more enjoyment. The supine work can have more challenge, and more noticeable benefits. Based on that, an excellent compromise is to request a session that starts supine and finish prone. By starting supine, there’s more likely that half the time will be supine, and you will have more time on some of the muscles that have been neglected in massages that started prone and only left 10-15 minutes at the end to cover all of the great work that can happen facing up.
When people explore massage and bodywork, there’s a lot of ground to cover. Touch modalities have been around forever, all over the world. One consideration is pressure levels: strong, medium, light – and there’s a fourth category: no pressure, which could also be called sustained contact. Sustained contact with no pressure, or feather light touch, is obviously more subtle than massage or bodywork. Feather-light touch has more effect on the central nervous system, especially the brain, which functions in a medium of electro-magnetic pulsations.
The energy flow of the hands touching the head has an effect on brain-wave and neuro-logical activity. Feather-light touch anywhere on the body will effect the brain more directly than regular pressure levels of massage. Some energy modalites involve touching two different meridians at the same time. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) works extensively with theories based on principles of life force energy. TCM also has a lot of off-chutes techniques discovered by various healers. Energy Healing is mostly directed toward the human energy field, also known as the auric field. This also bridges into the concept of subtle bodies and also chakras. Fortunately, the techniques can be practiced without adhering to any belief systems. You do a process and observe the result. Some people notice striking benefits and some people do not notice benefits. Some of the techniques could be compared to meditation. In every case, it comes down to the cultivation of awareness within stillness.
Four million people have been instructed in Reiki over a period since 1970. It’s a classic technique of energy healing. It uses visualization of symbols and the idea that hands can transmit universal life force. Reiki can be combined with any activity. Prior to Reiki becoming known in the 70’s, an earlier example of energy healing in the west, was was Polarity Therapy, develop by ostopath Randolf Stone. This is a synthesis of eastern philosophy and alternative medicine. Keep in mind, there was no acupuncture school in the western hemisphere until 1970, in London, England. Modern medicine was relatively new, and ancient wisdom was largely suppressed. Most of these alternative healing arts are timeless, or go back more than 4,000 years. In recent decades, we’re seeing the scientific community more willing to validate the effectiveness of modalities which involves conceptual frameworks which cannot be proven or dis-proven.

Stress reduction becomes more of a priority during pregnancy. In a 600-hr massage therapy program, it is common to devote 30 hours of class time to the particular needs of a pregnant client. We study the most common symptoms of pregnant women and how to adjust our massage technique accordingly. Each trimester has different protocols. By the third trimester,
the entire session is done side-lying, with props and pillows.
Women who normally get a massage once or twice per year find themselves coming in more often during pregnancy. On one level, it could for a specific complaint. On another level, it could have to do with increased awareness that mothering is all about taking care of others, and that whole dynamic starts with a willingness to also receive nurturing. This is sometimes refered to as “putting yourself into the equation.”
Late in the term, there’s a lot of pressure on internal organs from the expanding uterus. Most notable, is the compression toward the bottom of the spine. This includes the piriformis muscle.

The value of massage in relation to athletic activity is similar to the value of stretching. For that reason, a lot of massage therapy includes stretching. The difference with massage is the ability
to get specific, with a single muscle, or even a single point on a muscle. Massage techniques help your body clear neuro-muscular interference pattern, which inhibit strength. Test your strength, get a massage, test your strength again. Notice the difference. At minimum, your muscles should feel more willing to work. It’s often most noticeable with muscles that operate
operate the hip and knee joints.
Many sports require repetitive strain. After a strenuous event, we focus on the particular muscles that worked the hardest. The objective is to reduce the recovery time. Massage can assist your immune system with process of tissue repair.
Anything you can do to support optimal functioning in your body will lower your risk of a sports injury. Massage is just one example, and it ties in with the theme of proper rest. Some of our clients come in for sports massage to compensate for the lack of a daily stretching routine.
Bodywork is an effective way to increase range of motion.
Another aspect of sports massage pertains to the protocols for addressing injuries. For example, Ida Rolph discovered that lymph drainage applied to a sprain, immediately after the
accident, can reduce the healing time from several weeks, down to several days. When you
start talking about massage as medicine, then it shifts over to the domain of chiropractors, osteopaths, or naprapaths. They are doctors who are trained in manual manipulation. They can also diagnose the situation. By contrast, our role is entirely focused on reducing the stress associated with the injury, in the hopes of reducing the time it takes to your to heal itself.

Some therapists specialize in deep tissue, which also has a variety of brand names which correspond with trademarked schools and seminars. Myo-fascial release, neuro-muscular technique, and trigger point therapy each represent variations on deep tissue. Most massage therapists build a repertoire of deep tissue techniques throughout their career in bodywork. In comparison to swedish, it takes longer to develop proficiency with deep tissue modalities. For many clients requesting deep tissue, what they actually have in mind is a swedish with very firm pressure.
Structural bodywork was pioneered by Ida Rolph, Phd in the ‘40s and ‘50s and became widely known in the ‘70s. Rolfing has numerous spin-offs, and the techniques are now being taught
by Rolfers to massage therapists in programs that range from one day to two years.
This is the classic style of massage, most common, and most popular in the west.
It has a quality of flow, with continuous touch and transitional strokes. Swedish is
also open-ended: so long as a few rules are followed, it can be combined with other
systems. Swedish incorporates:
Joint mobilization, rocking and shaking
Swedish is an effective platform that allows blending blending of pressure point theraty, muscle
and fascia techniques together into one session. It can be light and relaxing or
stronger and challenging, which usually provides relaxation afterwards.
A Swedish massage is generally customized according to the goals of the session, which can be discussed with your therapist when you arrive at the studio.
